Ben Paige-Fowl Front- The balance Between Promotion And Exploitation Of Public Lands

When finding a perfect balance of talking about public lands, I mention Jamie Howard’s film, Location X, as a prime example of filming a secret fishing spot without revealing the location. In my podcasts and television series, my goal is to encourage newcomers into outdoor sports, but in doing so, being respectful to the established hunters/anglers in keeping their favorite spots secret. There is a responsibility not only to the animals that inhabit these areas, but to the people that hunt and fish there as well.

Hunter always knew he wanted to become a guide since he could remember. Not having a preference to the type of guiding, he enrolled himself in guiding school 36 hours away from home. Once he finished guide school, the class celebrated by camping out for two days and truly putting their skills to the test.

Elliot began his true fishing experience in Alaska at the age of 18 unloading fishing boats and going fishing in his spare time. Three weeks into being in Nantucket, Elliot was fishing off the beach, and ended up catching a brown shark, pulling it by the tail up onto the beach. After a video of him catching, handling and releasing a shark on Nantucket went viral on social media and then to conventional TV, Elliot found himself on over 80 TV shows and other interviews.

Derek DeYoung - Artist And Angler Living In Montana, Florida Keys And Northern Michigan

The tides were late that day and Rich wanted to fish from 2:00 P.M. through past dark.  We chose to visit Derek in Big Pine in the morning to get the interview for the TV episode.  We hit the water at Hawks Cay and headed to Long Key Bridge.  Derek was hoping to get a bite on a live mullet because he had never seen that happen before.

Derek is one of my favorite guests, and soon, we became fast friends.  I knew I wanted to do a podcast with him, but it seemed like we had run out of time.  I offered him a ride back to Big Pine instead of his wife having to pick him up, and we put on the headphones and hit record.

Clay Watson- Cuba Fishing, Torn Labrums, Jackson Hole And What Makes A Great Guide

Clay recently returned from a trip to Cuba, where he fished in a string of islands 60 miles off the south coast that look very similar to the Florida Keys.  The difference is that these islands are pristine and uninhabited. When traveling to Cuba, Clay needed to have research and educational purposes to be there, and Clay learned all he could about fishing there. Clay fished near Gardens of the Queen, a popular diving and fishing destination because it is one of the few intact reefs existing in the Caribbean.

Will Taylor – Guiding For Giant Georgia Trout, Figuring Out Sponsorship And Life

I became interested in Will Taylor when I noticed his photos on Instagram. Each photo has a different look and feel to it, and I was very interested in his North Georgia waters.  Blue Ridge, Georgia was only down the road about an hour away from where I grew up in Chattanooga, TN. Yet, I had no idea that trout the size of my leg lived there.

Dr. Joe Martin- Rags To Riches To Ruin To Redemption

I didn’t know anything about Joe, and didn’t know what to expect from my time with him, but I was also blown away by his story.  From horrible conditions in Liberty City, FL (where Grand Theft Auto is set) to a 4.0 and honors in college, to a great job and being the author of several books before the age of 30.  Then, he lost it all from a series of bad decisions, only to get it back and then some.

Brendan Smith And Turner Rowland - The Men In The Arena

I had the honor of recording this podcast in Bozeman, Montana with my son, Turner Rowland, and his roommate, Brendan Smith. Turner and Brendan both moved to Bozeman after graduating High School in pursuit of their love for hunting and fishing.

Recently, Turner just finished his first season as an elk hunting guide. For training, Turner started in September this year, and over the course of a month, spent two weeks bow hunting, and then two weeks of rifle hunting. Turner is out at camp base six days a week, and loves every minute of it. He developed an interest in hunting at an early age, and after seeing some elk videos in the mountains, Turner knew he wanted to be a guide.
